Winners of AppsAfrica Awards 2020 Announced

The winners of AppsAfrica.com Innovation Awards 2020 which celebrate the best in mobile and tech from across Africa have been announced.

AppsAfrica.com is a leading pan-African technology news portal and advisory service, dedicated to delivering the latest insight on mobile, tech and innovation in Africa.

2020 Awards is the sixth edition of the awards. This year the awards attracted over 500 submissions from 51 countries. The winners will be invited to join Africa Tech Summit in 2021 to connect with tech leaders, corporates, and investors at both their African and European Summits.

The winners were drawn from 12 categories and assessed by an independent panel of industry experts including media, investors, and leaders from the tech ecosystem. The 2020 winners in each categories were:

Disruptive Innovation Award

This award recognises companies who have launched a service or created a product that has completely disrupted or forced innovation into an existing marketplace in Africa. Entries open across all sectors.

Winner – 54gene (Nigeria)

HealthTech Award

This award celebrates companies that have used technology and innovation to create and implement life changing and life-saving health services in Africa.

Winner: Envisionit Deep AI (South Africa / UK)

Best African App Award

This award recognises the best of the best across the African app ecosystem. Judges looked for great design, creativity, excellent user interface, usability, originality, innovation and adoption.

Winner: Carry1st for Gebeta (South Africa)

Cybersecurity Award

This award celebrates companies that have successfully implemented ground-breaking security services protecting data, workloads and systems for individuals and organizations across the continent.

Winner: Sendmarc (South Africa)

Blockchain Award

This award will recognise a company that has applied or developed blockchain technology for use within the supply chain to increase the speed, efficiency, accuracy, transparency or cost-effectiveness of any sector in Africa.


Winner: Luno (United Kingdom/South Africa

Media & Entertainment Award

This award seeks to recognise the best and most engaging in news and entertainment services across the continent.

Winner: myFanPark (South Africa/Nigeria)

EdTech Award

This award recognises companies and products striving to transform and deliver quality, technology-rich innovative solutions enhancing education across Africa.

Winner: Xhuma (South Africa)

Agri & FoodTech Award

This award recognises the best tech innovations driving agriculture and the future of food across the continent

Winner: ComX (Nigeria)

FinTech Award

This award recognises the best fintech innovation including digital currency, bitcoin, mobile money, wallets, P2P, money remittances & transfers, point of sale or funding platforms.

Winner: Beyonic (Uganda)

Social Impact Award

This award recognises an inspiring use of any technology that has a positive and transformational social impact for an African community while contributing to the environment, economy, community or social development.

Winner: Envisionit Deep AI (South Africa / UK)

eCommerce Award

This award is dedicated to celebrating the wave of online and mobile commerce initiatives booming across Africa.

Winner: Sokowatch (Kenya)

Mobility Award

This award seeks to recognise the leading mobility ventures using technology such as hardware, software, robotics, drones or innovative mobile services that improve mobility, logistics or supply chains in an African market.

Winner: Kobo360 (Nigeria)

According to Andrew Fassnidge Founder of AppsAfrica.com, “This year saw a large increase of entries from sectors currently booming due to the effects of the pandemic, including HealthTech, Edtech, Gaming, Fintech, eCommerce and many Covid19 related entries with many great investment opportunities across the continent."
